Tên báo cáo: Statistical Physics Approaches to Emergent Phenomena in Complex Systems
Abstract: “More Is Different” – a famous quote of Nobel Prize in Physics laureate PW Anderson laid down the foundation of a new paradigm in Science. Specifically, the behaviour of a complex system, which is composed of a vast number of constituents, can not be predicted based on the behaviours of its constituents. Over more than half a century, statistical physics has been successfully applied to such systems. In my talk, using my own research as examples, I will illustrate the power of statistical physics approaches in understanding various phenomena taken from social, biological and neural systems. We first start from the timely question of how and why our society, modelled as a magnetic system of interacting spins, can become polarized/fragmented. Next, we show how the interplay between heterogeneity in their interactions and learning of neurons shapes the computational capability of their network.

Tên báo cáo:  Terahertz Spectroscopy and Metamaterial
Abstract: The rapid development of 5G and emerging 6G technologies, operating from 85 GHz to 3 THz, has intensified global interest in the terahertz (THz) spectrum. Beyond communication applications, the THz region is increasingly explored for advanced material characterization and for creating next‑generation radiation sources and sensors. In our recent THz study, we introduce a metamaterial design that integrates nanomaterials with micro‑structured split‑ring resonators (SRRs), enabling broadband THz emission. By tailoring the SRR geometry, the resonance peak can be precisely shifted to enhance detection of specific spectral signatures. This tunability allows accurate alignment with the absorption features of hazardous materials such as C‑4 explosive—characterized by peaks at 0.87 THz, 1.5 THz, and 2 THz—as well as for sensitive identification of trace antibiotics like kanamycin commonly found in food and livestock environments.

Tên báo cáo:  Higher-order shear deformation theory (HSDT) for plate structures
Abstract:
This report presents an overview and theoretical analysis of higher-order shear deformation theory (HSDT), a modern approach that enables accurate description of transverse shear deformation effects without requiring the shear correction factor used in First-order Shear Deformation Theory (FSDT). The study focuses on the formulation of the displacement field and the corresponding strain components for three variants of HSDT: the original five-variable model (HSDT-5) and two improved models developed in this work, namely the four-variable model (HSDT-4) and the seven-variable model (HSDT-7). The HSDT-4 variant reduces the number of unknowns by one by decomposing the transverse displacement into bending and shear components; however, it does not reduce the order of the derivatives and still requires C 1 continuity as in the original model. In contrast, the HSDT-7 variant introduces two additional independent rotational variables, thereby reducing the order of derivatives in the governing equations by one and relaxing the continuity requirement from C 1 to C 0 . This relaxation facilitates the imposition of boundary conditions, particularly clamped boundary conditions. On this basis, the stress–strain relationship is established according to Hooke's law under the plane- stress assumption, providing the foundation for deriving the governing equations for three fundamental problems of plate structures: static bending, free vibration, and linear buckling. The report also analyzes, compares, and evaluates the advantages and disadvantages of each theory from three main perspectives: the number of unknown variables, the order of derivatives in the governing equations, and the required level of continuity (C 0 or C 1 ) – three factors that directly influence the computational cost, the complexity of solution formulation, and the ease of enforcing boundary conditions. The overall results provide an important theoretical basis for selecting an appropriate HSDT model in subsequent studies on the analysis and simulation of the mechanical behavior of plate structures.
