Continuum Mechanics from the Perspective of Prof. Dr. Holm-Johannes Altenbach
From March 27 to April 17, 2026, the Institute for Advanced Study in Technology (IAST), Ton Duc Thang University (TDTU) is proud to host Prof. Dr. Holm-Johannes Altenbach. A world leading scientist in mechanics and international scientific publishing, Prof. Altenbach joins TDTU as an Adjunct Professor to engage in collaborative research, scientific publishing, and teaching activities.
Dr. Holm-Johannes Altenbach has served as a full professor in engineering mechanics at Otto-von- Guericke-University Magdeburg (Germany). With more than 340 publications in peer-reviewed Web of Science (WoS) journals, he achieved an H-index of 38 with over 5,000 citations. He serves as an editor for the Springer Nature book series Advanced Structured Materials and peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (ZAMM), Mechanics of Composite Materials, and Continuum Mechanics and Thermodynamics, etc. Furthermore, he is a member of the International Association of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics and the International Research Center on Mathematics and Mechanics of Complex Systems (M&MoCS), Italy.
His research consistently pushes the boundaries of general theory of elastics and inelastic plates and shells, as well as creep and damage mechanics, and also expands into modern areas such as strength theories and nano- and micromechanics. Through his relentless efforts to explore the laws of mechanics, he has received numerous international awards and honors, including the Krupp Award (1992), the "Best Paper of the Year - Journal of Strain Analysis for Engineering Design" (2000), and various medals and honorary doctoral degrees. He is also a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2019) and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (2021), and was awarded the Lomonosov Gold Medal in 2023.
As part of this international partnership, Prof. Dr. Holm-Johannes Altenbach will deliver a specialized course "Lectures on Continuum Mechanics" at IAST-TDTU. The presence of this internationally renowned researcher not only provides a rare opportunity for young researchers to access top-tier knowledge and the latest scientific trends but also marks a strategic step in affirming the prestige of IAST-TDTU, thereby elevating its fundamental research capabilities and expanding its global collaborative network.
In addition, Prof. Dr. Holm-Johannes Altenbach will participate as a Keynote Speaker at the International Conference on Advanced Materials and Sustainable Development (iCAMSD 2026), taking place from July 12 to 15, 2026, at Ton Duc Thang University (conference link: icamsd2026.tdtu.edu.vn). Notably, high-quality scientific papers from the conference will be selected for publication in the Advanced Structured Materials book series by Springer Nature, where the Professor serves as an editor.
The IAST warmly welcomes Prof. Dr. Holm-Johannes Altenbach and looks forward to a productive and inspiring collaboration in Vietnam.
