PhD THESIS DEFENSE AT THE DEPARTMENTAL LEVEL – FIELD OF COMPUTATIONAL SCIENCE

The Institute for Advanced Study in Technology (IAST) is pleased to announce and congratulate PhD candidate Nguyen Thanh Tung for successfully defending his doctoral thesis at the departmental level in the field of Computational Science at Ton Duc Thang University.

Details of the defense:

  • Thesis title: Using high-performance DFT calculation to study the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of one-dimensional monolayer materials
  • Date: 8:30 AM, August 26, 2025
  • Location: Meeting Room, 5th Floor, Library, Ton Duc Thang University
  • Main supervisor: Prof. Dr. Tran Cong Phong – Ton Duc Thang University
  • Co-supervisor: Dr. Hoang Van Ngọc – Thu Dau Mot University

Research Overview:
The thesis of PhD candidate Nguyen Thanh Tung focused on investigating the structural, electronic, magnetic, and optical properties of stanene (SnNRs) and silicon carbide (SiCNRs) nanoribbons using the DFT method, employing the high-performance VASP software. The research concentrated on two methods of modifying the material structure: atomic/molecular adsorption (Na, Mg, Al, CO, F₂, NO₂, F, Cl, Br, I) and substitutional atomic doping (Fe, S). The calculations included structural optimization, bandgap determination, density of states (DOS) calculations, charge density analysis, magnetic moment evaluation, dielectric function assessment, and optical absorption spectra. The results contribute to a deeper understanding of the physical mechanisms and provide valuable theoretical insights for the development of nanoelectronics, spintronics, and optoelectronics devices.

Once again, congratulations to PhD candidate Nguyen Thanh Tung, and best wishes for continued success and new achievements in your upcoming research endeavors!
