Seminar by Dr Hoang Minh Tuan and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Trung Kien

At 9:00 a.m, April 26, 2024, the lectures from Dr Hoang Minh Tuan and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Trung Kien at the 5th Floor Room of the Library with detailed content as follows:

Dr Hoang Minh Tuan presents a talk entitled "Influence of chirality on buckling of inextensible rings subject to dead loading"

Abstract:

A variational model is used to study buckling of flexible but inextensible rings made from filaments with or without chirality and subject to dead loading. In contrast to previous works in which only in-plane bifurcation are included, we allow for both in-plane and out-of-plane bifurcation. For rings made from filaments with no chirality, circular rings subject to dead loading undergo out-of-plane bifurcation at critical values of loading lower than those previously published. For rings made from filaments with chirality, on the other hand, circular rings undergo coupling between in-plane and out-of-plane bifurcation at critical values of loading lower than those at which buckling would occur with no chirality. The destabilizing effect of chirality, however, can be countered by increasing the torsional rigidity relative to the flexural rigidity

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Trung Kien presents a talk entitled "Elastic modulus prediction of concrete with graded transition zone"

Abstract:

Based on the sphere assemblage model and differential scheme substitution, the ordinary differential equations for elastic modulus of concrete are constructed. A power-law model which presents the variation of elastic moduli with radius in the transition zone, is incorporated in the differential equation to calculate the effective elastic modulus of materials. The effect of the transition zone is also investigated.
