On August 31, 2023, the lectures from Dr. Le Thi Kim Dung and MSc. Dinh Cong Du take place on the Library floor 5.

Dr. Le Thi Kim Dung presents a talk entitled "alpha-Glucosidase Inhibitor from the Stems of Knema globularia"

Abstract

alpha-Glucosidase is one of the therapeutic approaches for treating type 2 diabetes mellitus. Almost 95% of diabetes patients worldwide have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, resulting in 1.5 million fatalities each year. Knema globularia (Lam.) Warb. has been used popularly as a folk medicine in the Asian region. In this study, eight new compounds and nine known compounds were isolated from the stems of K. globularia. The chemical structures were elucidated by an analysis of their NMR and HRESIMS data as well as by comparison with literature values. The absolute configurations were determined using time-dependent density functional theory electronic circular dichroism (TD-DFT-ECD). The isolated compounds that were obtained in sufficient quantities were evaluated for alpha-glucosidase inhibition. Most compounds tested showed potent inhibition toward  alpha-glucosidase with the IC 50 values in the range of 0.4−26.6 μM (the positive control, acarbose, IC 50 93.6 μM). This study not only enriches information of chemical diversity of K. globularia plant, but also provides an insight to synthesize natural products- inspired compounds which could serve as agents for managing diabetes.

MSc. Dinh Cong Du presents a talk entitled "A parameterized interval analysis approach for static structural response with multiple uncertain parameters"

Abstract

An effective approach based on the framework of parameterized interval analysis (PIA) and optimization and anti-optimization problems (OAP) is presented for evaluating the static response of structures with uncertain-but-bounded parameters. In the approach, the parametric inverse of the stiffness matrix is handled by using a Neumann series expansion, resulting in approximate solutions. Subsequently, Lightning Attachment Procedure Optimization (LAPO) algorithm is applied as a robust optimization tool to efficiently solve the objective function of OAP. Several numerical examples are conducted to demonstrate the applicability and effectiveness of the proposed approach.
