On October 16, 2025, the Institute for Advanced Study in Technology (IAST) was honored to welcome Prof. Dr. Carsten Drebenstedt (Federal Republic of Germany) and Prof. Dr. Changwoo Lee (South Korea) to visit and present a scientific seminar. This event affirms IAST's commitment to accessing advanced knowledge, ushering in an era of deep cooperation in smart mining technology and environmental protection.
The seminar brought together two scholars with a wealth of academic achievements and practical experience:
- Dr. Carsten Drebenstedt: Professor of Mining, Director of the Institute of Mining and Civil Engineering, member of the Society of Mining Professors (SOMP); Honorary Professor, Honorary Doctor of mining universities in Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Romania, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, and Vietnam. He previously served as Vice-Rector, Dean of the Faculty of Mining and Geosciences at Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg (ranked 487th in the QS World University Rankings 2026).
- Dr. Changwoo Lee: Professor of Mining, Member of the Korean Mining Safety Council; Member of the Advisory Board for: the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy of Korea, Korea Expressway Corporation, and Korea Infrastructure Safety and Technology Corporation. He previously served as Head of the Department of Energy and Mineral Resources Engineering; Dean of the College of Engineering and the College of Industry and Information, Dong-A University, South Korea.
At the seminar, the professors presented two topics that provide direction for the sustainable development of the mining industry: Mine Closure with Post-mining Landscape and Smart Mining. These are major research directions in the global mining industry and are also research topics currently being implemented by the Division of Sustainable Resource and Environment Development at the IAST Institute.
The welcoming of these two leading scientists is a crucial step in IAST’s strategy to internationalize its scientific research and technology development activities. The event is not only an opportunity for the Institute's scientists and experts to access the most advanced knowledge and technology from Germany and South Korea but also opens up potential cooperation opportunities in implementing joint research projects and high-quality human resource training. This collaboration aims to shape a modern, efficient, and sustainable mining industry in Vietnam in the era of Industry 4.0.
